Human Shrub and pizzas at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show
Monday 13th July 2009
The Human Shrub has struck, the evangelist has taken a lead from the guerilla gardening movement and taken on Colchester borough council. Unhappy at the state of the planters around the town the shrouded figure has been planting to make a point.
Colchester borough council announced recently the intention to 'improve' the parks and green spaces in the town by applying for grants for projects totalling over £3million. Unfortunately this has been followed by the local press picking up on the 'disgraceful' state of the current planters that have been full of weeds and nothing else.
Last week saw council employees clearing and mulching but no new planting, with the resultant impact being delays to traffic as lanes were closed. The Human Shrub has decided that enough is enough and is on the streets. All hail the Human Shrub, go for it.
With no irrigation or maintenance plan the exploits of the Human Shrub might not have a great survival rate, the point though has been made. It is only a matter of time before the state of some of the roundabouts in the town are next on the list.
All this and the unedifying sight, on what limited national television coverage there was for the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower show, of respected RHS horticulturalist Matthew Wilson (previously curator at RHS Hyde Hall Essex) cooking pizza for Rachel De Thame. Now Matthew may well enjoy his cooking, he may well be a star in the kitchen and have form in a previous career but surely this was an unecessary feature?
Most people can associate the activity in the garden or the allotment with cooking, surely the country has not 'dumbed down' that much but is it really necessary to 'fill' the air time with such frivolous wallpaper? With the debate ongoing about the standard and quality of the production of the relaunched BBC flagship gardening programme, Gardeners World, creating waves to see such an element included was saddening. To cap it all Joe Swift entered stage left to eat it, what a waste of time. (Rant Ends.)
