Do you think about a garden designer when in the toilet?
Tuesday 26th May 2009
Some might say, does sponsorship of a show garden at the RHS Chelsea flower show give value for money? Does it deliver? Does it benefit the sponsor in any way? Well from a personal perspective it would appear that this year it has worked, it has left a lasting impression, in fact it has become rather intrusive. How on earth can this be the case?
Early one morning (just as the sun was rising ...) this week as the morning routine got underway Tony Smith, conceptual garden designer, came to mind, disturbing? A vacant mind began to fill with the thoughts of the day ahead and his garden returned, it felt wrong, it is wrong. Having discussed some points of design with him briefly at the close of day were these coming back to haunt, niggling away inside? Did the colour pink jar so much that it caused nausea and a desire to destruction. Nope, 'mmmmmmmm ...it's soft'.
Laughing out loud feels odd some times, laughing out loud in a small room might cause others to stare or enquire after one's well being, especially if the reason is so weird. Quilted Velvet has left an impression, a soft and indelible impression on the concious and sub-concious. A garden that was challenging and startling has settled to such an extent that the show garden sponsor now stalks. Would such a combination have been thought of as such some weeks and months ago?
Of course this might not have created such an imprint if it had not been so ably supported in it's publicity during the short but entertaining discussion session in the RHS Gardening Matters marquee. Here the ramblings of young James Alexander-Sinclair and Cleve West together with Tony Smith resulted in regular and pertinent 'commercial breaks' with the strap-line 'mmmmm ... it's soft' punctuating the proceedings. (Still not sure exactly how many 'm's there should be.) Fun, irreverant and informative, the garden, the background and the detail came out to add colour to the resultant garden.
So, show garden sponsorship works, conceptual garden design can work and the RHS informal conversational sessions work, well for some more than others.
