RHS Chelsea flower show approaches and tickets are selling fast...
Thursday 7th May 2009
Typical, busy organising the garden design and build of others gardens that a simple task of getting tickets for the RHS Chelsea flower show gets forgotten. Option A, sold out, nothing for it but to resort to plan B to visit the wonderful spectacle of the “ultimate event in the gardening calendar”.
But hold on, what’s this? Some poking around looking for news on this year’s event sees a reduction in the main show gardens. Not only that but one might be a triptych of gardens.
Certain note worthy garden designers would appear to be absent from the line-up with no Andy, no Tom and no ‘gardening bad boy’ Diarmuid (what a daft expression). Sadly the exuberant team from Flemings nurseries in Australia will be absent, no colourful daft tit-fers on show.
Glancing at a list of garden designers shows that two are members of the Society of Garden Designers (MSGD), what does that say? The number of large show gardens is down 25% and the area that might have been filled with subliminal planting and inspirational garden design lost by say 1000 square metres. A marquee or more trade stands in their place?
Nursery exhibitors such as respected and long-standing attendees Notcutts have decided their focus lies elsewhere. Sponsors Brett Landscaping pulled out resulting in a record 35th consecutive show garden exhibit not being designed and built by Geoff Whiten. (Could that ever be matched in future?)
The space will be filled with something no doubt, but what? Will this be the year of the small, the bespoke garden design, the niche supplier of the rare and exotic or the specialist uber cool product. The likelihood is it will be the year of frugal, make do and mend, “we’ll get through this, we’ve seen worse.” The sheer longevity of the event almost guarantees that it has.
Stalwart sponsors The Daily Telegraph and Laurent Perrier alongside principal show sponsors Marshalls remain firmly ensconced amongst the Plane trees. A fresh palette of names and ideas will be guided into the limelight for the BBC to film in intricate HD detail (oops, no the BBC are not doing that this year). The London season will commence, the glamour and celebrity will swarm, the financial markets will rally (well around the Gala evening at least) and the show will be a resounding success. Grab a ticket while stocks last.
