Show garden concepts and memories, the pressure commences...
Saturday 2nd May 2009
This week saw the presentation of the concept design for the Sandringham flower show, Stradsett Hall garden show and hospital courtyard. As part of the process of designing such a concept it is always worthwhile to get a second opinion, a critique or some 'notes' from fellow professionals. All seemed to be in order, enthusiasm and smiles in abundance, one slightly apprehensive garden designer breathed a sigh of relief. The show garden design seemed to be ticking boxes.
With the due diligence completed it was sent out to the client for their feedback and comment. This garden contains a large 'it' within, very large, striking and dominant. It has to be to generate the impact and follow through the concept. Client nerves, will it be too dominant? There is no hiding from the fact that it will catch the eye, the key will be to soften the impact with planting.
Oh the joy of plants, will they be available, will they be of the quality to satisfy judges, public and garden designer? Will they be the right price?
At times like this the roller coaster ride of exhibiting a show garden can become questionable as 'an enjoyable' exercise. But if everything was easy then everyone would be doing it. Two years ago we were about to commence the build and preparation of our roof garden at the Chelsea flower show. The sponsor was content to remain in the background and took a 'hands off' approach and the RHS helped with anything we asked for. It all went like clockwork, well except for the old man who was determined to be a thorn in everyone's side, he got up a few people's bugle on occasion.
Having presented the concept for this years endeavours the detail and the logicitics will now become important. Time to start pushing forward on that. Special day out on Wednesday though, rewards can come from the most unlikely directions.
