James May is one member of the “Three Must-Get-Gears” who present the BBC television programme “Top Gear”. James is an intelligent guy, witty, insightful and articulate. His thoughtful, perhaps calming, presence alongside the blustering middle England of Jeremy Clarkson and boisterous enthusiasm of Richard Hammond have brought much entertainment and relief. All three have spread like a viscous oil spill over the garage floor into new avenues of entertainment and education.

James though has a new mission we read, to create a Plasticine Garden at this years RHS Chelsea flower show. Smiles form with the vision of the down to earth presenter working amongst the dedicated plants men and women at the Royal Hospital. Chuckles bubble forth as garden designers who will have spent months (if not years) preparing for their shot at glory observe the casual approach of ‘Captain Slow’. Will Alan Titchmarsh be asked to present the small piece to camera on this show garden exhibit or Carol Klein asked to discuss propagating plasticine plants? Perhaps Joe Swift will grab the honour and represent the arrival of the Lad’s attempt.

A master stroke of public relations with talk of a BBC series to accompany the spectacle it will be fascinating to see how James responds. A request for assistance has been made, post a snap of the model you can make in plasticine of a Porsche 911 to the Daily Telegraph and you too could be a Chelsea this year.

After the feeling of well-being, a realisation dawns, this is a flower show, for blooms of the highest order, the jewel in the Royal Horticultural Society’s show season.. Will there be any real plants or planting design? This is the worlds ‘premier’ event, the pinnacle for garden designers and plants people, the debate will no doubt rage, is it a garden?

Apparently the concept was only confirmed a few weeks ago that this project would proceed the question is need the allocated space be so large though, 35 square metres?
