Oldest roof garden...?
Monday 30th March 2009
Colchester Castle is one of Britain's oldest with a rich and varied history dating from pre-Roman, Norman, mediaeval and through to modern history. In the eighteenth century the castle was 'saved' for the town by Charles Gray who went about restoring what was then a castle in decline.
An interesting feature of Colchester castle is a sycamore tree that grows on the roof. Some say that it was planted into the bones of a princess, some say that it was planted to commeorate the Battle of Waterloo whereas a common belief is that it was planted by the daughter of the gaoler when the castle was used as a gaol.
Now in terms of roof garden design or the identity of the original 'garden designer' this is all rather tenuous but if someone consciously plants something then a garden it is, do you not think?
Whatever the exact state of origin the tree has been a feature of the roof line for well over two hundred years and could well claim to be one of the oldest roof gardens, unless someone knows better.......
