Garden designers from Essex, Suffolk and across East Anglia attended the Autumn Conference of the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) held recently at Imperial College, London. The theme of the conference was ‘The Tardis Garden: thinking about small spaces’ and speakers included international garden designer Vladimir Sitta whose entertaining and individual style of presentation included a portfolio of highly inspiring contemporary garden design projects. He encouraged the audience to “create the tradition of tomorrow” in garden and landscape design.

The second conference themed around the garden was held recently at Trinity Park, Ipswich, Suffolk. Under the title of “The Well Seasoned Garden – Contemporary but well rooted” the day consisted of speakers from the world of garden design, planting, garden history and garden restoration. Chaired by Suffolk Agricultural Association President-elect Lady Xa Tollemache the day included enlightening lectures by; Noel Kingsbury, renowned plantsman and garden designer, Alan Gray, garden maker at East Ruston, Tom Petherick involved with the rediscovery of the Lost Gardens of Heligan and Caroline Holmes, garden historian and author. The audience of garden designers, garden owners and plants people enjoyed a thoroughly informative and entertaining set of presentations.

Garden Design and the garden designer in Essex and across East Anglia face continuous challenges. With around 510mm of rainfall in Essex annually the distrubition is changing. Outside Colchester on the Essex / Suffolk border there was barely a drop in April followed by nearly three times the average in May. The famous sell off at the conclusion of this years RHS Chelsea Flower show for the DHL Sun Chariot garden raised money for The Princes Trust. The trust was the chosen charity by DHL logisitics our sponsor and the sum raised was nearly £800.

The innovative design concept has challenged the team as first-timers at Chelsea but resulted in an inspiring and highly bespoke design for a contemporary roof space.
