Oh dear, rejection, failure to adher to the brief, a lesson learnt. Recently asked to name my 'favourite flower or plant' in 50 to 100 words the following piece was offered for consideration;

A winter, early and full of snow, ice and cold weather, may it continue long and hard for another six weeks. Let the country slowly adapt to a winter of real challenges. May all the bugs and baddies disappear from our garden soil, leaving it cleansed and refreshed ready for a good mulch in early spring.

This year on visiting the RHS Chelsea flower show a single garden created an impact like no other, a reaction that was felt deep within the sub-conscious. It felt right, it brought an emotional response that was so strong it surprised as much as anything.

The first week of June has been one of extremes. Most obvious is the arrival of a period of warm and fabulous weather bringing out the glories of the garden and the glories of humanity. The last point refers in general to humanity rather than the specifics of the tabloid, media obsessed and shallow goings on in Westminster or elsewhere. Some might say, does sponsorship of a show garden at the RHS Chelsea flower show give value for money? Does it deliver? Does it benefit the sponsor in any way? Well from a personal perspective it would appear that this year it has worked, it has left a lasting impression, in fact it has become rather intrusive. How on earth can this be the case?

It was probably not the first time, it most definitely will not be the last time, but an artist in residence during the show for our show garden gave an added dimension to our exhibit. The word for the project had been 'verisimilitude' and what better way to demonstrate the mood and function of the garden than by having someone painting within it.

The dawn of Judgement Day, early arrivals and last minute checks were undertaken. As the daily watering exercise got underway an early film crew arrived to take some shots before the chaos began. Ever the diplomat when asked what he was doing, Andrew replied "I'm watering". Obvious really, the clue was the watering can with water coming out.

The final weekend dawned with the arrival of the plants, principally from Harveys Garden Plants in Suffolk. There was also the Eucalyptus from Wales (named Dai) and we do not speak much of the Buglessoides these days but I seem to recall they travelled in from Belgium, but were not used.
